The 1966 Dodge Coronet 500 -the soul of the Dodge Charger

Elwood Engle modified the 66 Dodge Coronet to
create an instant classic, the Dodge Charger...

The Dodge Coronet History

The Coronet was a full-size car from Dodge in the 1950s. Sharing the same chassis were the Dodge Royal and Dodge Custom Royal. In the early fifties, the Meadowbrook was the four door version of the Coronet. By the 1960s, the Coronet name was transferred to Dodge's mid-size entry.

After a brief absence, the Coronet name reappeared in 1965 to denote Dodge's mid-sized car. It received a facelift in 1966 and most agree the 1966 Dodge Coronet 500 coupe was damn beautiful to look at. As a result, Chrysler's Elwood Engle's design team dropped a fastback on the Dodge Coronet to create an instant classic, the Dodge Charger.

"The '66 Coronet's new styling was exciting and very well received at the time. It was, perhaps, the first B-body that was 100% Elwood Engle (Chrysler's top designer) designed." -Hemmings Motor News
